What is Shame and Why Does it Matter?

Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience
of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy
of love and belonging.
— Brené Brown

Shame is the undermining belief of feeling inadequate, not good enough, or unworthy as a person, not just in some activity. Shame is the root of why you either pull away from close relating or respond defensively or critically to another.

Shame is the thief of true joy. Shame is the fuel of self-sabotage. Shame is the stronghold of why you keep repeating self- and other- destructive behaviors. Shame is the barrier to releasing your full giftedness, talents, and creativity.

Shame is the lie that no one could love, accept, and enjoy you if they knew the real and full you. Shame is the fear that while God may forgive and love you, God couldn’t possibly delight in you.

Shame is the painful exposure
of trusting in something other than
our unshakable significance as beloved by God
for our deepest identity,
and therefore feeling unwanted.
— Christopher English
